About this book
Dick and His Cat and Other Tales by Edith Carrington brings together a charming collection of late-Victorian animal stories that gently teach compassion, courage, and the humane treatment of creatures great and small. Edited for the Humanitarian League era, these short fiction pieces—ranging from the adapted folk tale "Dick and His Cat" to heartwarming and thought-provoking shorts like "Trusty," "Out in the Cold," "The Story of a Fly," and "Betty and Snowdrop"—blend folklore, moral education, and animal-focused storytelling. The anthology reflects 19th-century efforts to introduce kindness and empathy into children's reading, influenced by contemporary humanitarian causes and the RSPCA’s ideals. Without resorting to heavy moralizing, the tales invite listeners into cozy villages, city streets, and small domestic dramas where animals reveal human virtues and frailties. Ideal for listeners who love historical fiction, animal stories, or family-friendly audiobooks, this collection is perfect for parents, teachers, and anyone seeking a nostalgic, gentle listen—suitable for bedtime, classroom readings, or anyone wanting a reminder of the simple power of kindness.
