About this book
Exotics and Retrospectives by Lafcadio Hearn opens a door onto Meiji-era Japan through the lyrical eye of a wanderer who made the country his home. Hearn’s essays, written as Japan was emerging into global view, blend philosophical reflection with ethnographic curiosity, offering readers a rare, intimate portrait of customs, religion, and everyday beauty.
The collection’s first half, "Exotics," records Hearn’s close observations of Japanese life—ranging from personal pilgrimages like his account of climbing Fuji to thoughtful explorations of Buddhist texts and the aesthetics of moonlight and memory. In "Retrospectives," Hearn moves beyond impartial reportage into candid, reflective pieces shaped by his travels across continents; here he muses on art, identity, and the fleeting nature of beauty. Throughout, his prose balances essayistic economy with poetic detail, making complex philosophical ideas accessible without losing nuance.
Ideal for listeners of philosophy and short nonfiction, and for anyone intrigued by cultural history, travel writing, or the literature of cross-cultural encounter, this audiobook rewards patient listening: a contemplative, richly descriptive journey into the heart of beauty and the mind that sought to understand it.
