About this book
Tom Taylor’s Our American Cousin delivers a lively Victorian comedy that skewers class, manners, and Anglo-American quirks with fizzing wit and theatrical bravado. Set in a three-act drawing-room farce, the play follows the plain-spoken American Asa Trenchard as he collides with the urbane English gentry, producing rapid-fire misunderstandings, bold satire, and the eccentric charm of Lord Dundreary—whose “Dundrearyisms” became a cultural sensation.
Written for the mid-19th-century stage, this play captures the rhythms and social anxieties of its era while remaining uproariously entertaining. Taylor’s sharp dialogue, situational comedy, and exaggerated characters bring Victorian society into comic relief, offering both slapstick moments and pointed observations about class and identity. The work’s historical footprint is notable: a staple of popular theatre in its day and linked to a pivotal night in American history, it endures as a cultural artifact as well as a crowd-pleasing farce.
Ideal for listeners who love classic plays, theatre history, or literary comedy, this audiobook is perfect for students, actors, and anyone who enjoys spirited period drama performed with gusto. Tune in for smart, timeless laughs and a window into 19th-century stagecraft.
