About this book
Visioning, a Novel by Susan Glaspell opens on Katie Jones’ comfortable, ordered world and quickly unsettles it with one impulsive rescue—setting the stage for a delicate, character-driven romance tangled with the pressures of war-era society. Katie, an "army girl" accustomed to social conventions, saves a stranger named Anne from despair and constructs a tidy story to preserve her own sense of belonging. When fragments of truth begin to surface, Katie’s carefully mapped life bends, forcing her to question identity, duty, and the limits placed on women in the early 20th century.
Rich in social observation and moral nuance, Glaspell’s novel blends elements of romance and war stories to explore themes of self-discovery, female agency, and the clash between private compassion and public reputation. The Washington and military backdrops give the narrative a historically grounded tension, while Glaspell’s witty, empathetic prose reveals the interior life of a woman learning to envision a different future.
Perfect for listeners who enjoy literary romance, historical fiction, and intimate war-era dramas, Visioning offers thoughtful pacing, emotional clarity, and a quietly powerful portrait of a woman seeking meaning amid changing times.
